Knees Hurt? Hip Pain? Shoulder Pain? Time to Grab the Reins on Your Healthy Aging Journey

Our generation of Greater than 50 individuals is grabbing the reins in pursing a path of healthy aging so we can continue to live the lives we love.

As we get older it gets a little confusing. One day you wake up and your knee hurts. One day, it's your hip. You wonder "what did I do yesterday to cause this?"

Are we destined to just react as things come up or is there a way to be more proactive?

Let's talk about pain

Our western culture tends to look at the body like a machine. You may have heard the term Bio-mechanics.
Bio-mechanics is the system of applying mechanical principles to living organisms, such as humans, animals, plants, and the functional basic units of life - the cells.

Mechanical principles? Oh, like a machine.

So, it makes sense that the general western medical world also looks to bio-mechanical explanations when things fail to work as expected. Although things are starting to change.

Experiencing pain?

Most of us have experienced back pain at some point in our lives. Then there's knee, shoulder, hip, wrist...And there are many more types of pain such as IBS, arthritis, migraines, fibromyalgia, and it goes on.

Western medicine is fantastic for things like emergency care, surgery and others. I would never not consult a doctor when I am experiencing a physical or emotional issue. I consider western medicine a part of my health care resources, just not the only one.

Biomechanics are just one piece of our physical puzzle, which we cannot solve, if we continue to insist that the body is nothing but a machine.

In reality, your body is not a machine made up of unrelated parts - it's much more complicated than that. The day you were born, you came into this world with an imprint, not only of your physical structure, but also of your physiology, your emotions, and your unique mind.

All of your physical, mental, and spiritual systems are entirely interconnected - your shoulder may be affected by your digestion, your knees by your kidneys, your heart by your divorce, your liver by your childhood.

Crazy, right?

Your nervous system may be causing your pain, (as referred to in this study, which focused on working with the nervous system rather than pain killers and manipulation, leaving twice as many people pain-free compared to conventional treatment), or it could be your endocrine, immune, digestive systems, or your emotional load, or the cumulative burden of chronic stress and life events, or your trauma - because, it's all interconnected.

So what do you do?

You address the whole body. The physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional parts. We can reduce pain when we take into consideration all aspects of human existence, not just the biomechanics.

This is where the self-care comes in. If we learn more about all the ways are bodies are interconnected and practice some simple movements that can benefit us, we can ward off some of what has been seen as just a part of getting older and perhaps, better deal with issues as they do come up.
